After 2 ½ days away, I’m so excited to come back and see the kids! I hear that they were FANTASTIC in my absence. And if that is the case, I believe that we have earned our “Toy Day” from filling the next part of our Candy Compliments Jar. I will check on that tomorrow and then message out details about the upcoming “Toy Day”. I can’t believe it’s almost February. This past month since the holidays has been a whirlwind of activities, both at school and for our family at home. This Friday marks the halfway point of the 3rd quarter. Progress Reports will go home on Friday, February 11. And our February Winter break begins after we complete the school day on Friday, February 18. This week, we will be doing a STEM project in which we build Shadow Sticks to tell time based on shadows and the position of the sun (much like a sun dial). We have been talking and learning about the sun, the moon, shadows, time of day, and seasons. This project will allow us to put some of this into real world experience. To make this project a success, we need something from you…TRASH! To be more specific, your recyclables. We need boxes mostly. We have lots of toilet paper tubes (though we never turn those away!). We need anything your kids can use to construct their version of a Shadow Stick. Last week, while I was out, they created designs for this…so I’m not even sure how vast their imaginations have gone and I’m not sure what objects they need. But any recyclables would help. This quarter in math, we just finished a unit on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. This was our first exposure to regrouping. We did a lot of hands on activities to demonstrate what it means to regroup in addition from ones to tens, and from tens to hundreds….and likewise in subtraction decomposing hundreds to tens and tens to ones. This is a difficult process and a hard concept to grasp for some. It takes time, and some grasp it sooner than others. This is something we will continue to work on, but I wanted to share some problems with you to show you different strategies we have been using for addition with regrouping and subtraction with decomposition (or regrouping). If your child is having difficulty with these concepts, hopefully these examples will help you to work through problems with your child and guide you on how you can help them.

Moving forward (i.e. dates and events to remember):
Welcome back!!! I hope that everyone had a relaxing and healthy break from school. I definitely enjoyed having this time with my family. And my house benefited from my time home to clean and organize!
This will be a little longer post, as I catch up on past, present, and future events. I have lots of pictures to share from all of the festivities during our last week of school. I will attach several documents showcasing pictures from the following days to CTLS, so log in there to see them:
