I had promised the kids that I would share the information for the podcast we'd been listening to. Looks like their website has changed. So here's the new website for the company who has created the Six Minutes podcasts, Gen-Z Media: https://gzmshows.com/ As I said, we were listening to the Six Minutes podcast, short 6-10 minute clips of a story told in 205 episodes (the last one being a MUCH longer finale). My kids (bio-kids, not school kids) have listened all the way through to the end, so I know that the content is OK for my 5th graders. As a class, we were on episode 39, I think....??? The link above leads to Gen-Z Media's site, which has the links of all of their podcasts. There is a new one I found, and I listened to the first episode of: Remy's Life Interrupted. It is an 11 year old girl in New Jersey talking about her life in quarantine. Seemed pretty interesting...and something your kids might be able to relate to right now! Other podcasts I've listened to (not all of, but parts of) include: Becoming Mother Nature and Young Ben Franklin. I know our kids are spending a lot of time on their technology, but I like the podcasts as something we have to LISTEN and pay attention to, not just watch. It gives our eyes a rest but keeps our minds active! ENJOY!

This week, I am giving you 5 assignments to choose from. You need to choose 3 of the 5 to complete for the week. You are welcome to do more, but 3 is all I’m asking for (that’s ONE per day). They are due by Wednesday evening. I will go over each of these during our chat Monday to explain them more in depth. If you still owe work from the past 6 weeks of digital learning, it’s not too late to get those turned in. Students who have shown responsibility for keeping up with their work will see the rewards of this. I have been very proud of all of those students who have been showing that they are ready for the independence and extra responsibilities that middle school will bring by getting their work done and communicating with me during our “distance learning”. Half of the class has turned in 90% or more of their work, and another 20% are not far behind them. I’m very proud of you Memory Messages to Friends: On the attached document, which lists the names of every student in our class, please write something TO or ABOUT each student. For TO, I could write “TO Ms. Stevens: I will miss you when I move downstairs to teach 2nd grade, but I’ll come visit during my lunch time.” For ABOUT, I could write “ABOUT Ms. Harris: Awesome dance moves, excellent artist”. Take your time to do this. These are your classmates you’ve been around ALL YEAR (minus the last 2 months), so surely you can come up with something NICE to say ABOUT or TO each of them. ***Please note that TO messages will be signed, meaning that I will list that it was from YOU. ABOUT messages are more like ways to describe the person, so I will not list who said what. These are due to me by Wednesday evening. I will compile these for each person and deliver them to you about a week after school ends. This is what I wanted your sign picture for…so if you haven’t sent it to me, please do so! If everyone participates, you will have a compilation of 25 NICE things said about you…maybe more if I add some too 😉. Virtual Field Trip Ideas:
Choose one and spend at least 30 minutes visiting your chosen location. Write 3 sentences about where you “went” and what you “saw” or “did”.
Words of Wisdom Live graduation ceremonies have either been cancelled or put on hold as we continue with social distancing and quarantining for safety. But people still want to celebrate their graduates, especially those who are finishing their senior years in high school and college. Those are big life accomplishments, a graduation they had looked forward to for years. NBC hosted a “live” but distanced Graduation for the country this weekend. Feel free to watch it here, if you are interested: Live: Graduate Together: America Honors The High School Class Of 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=7jrulgnbMHc&feature=emb_title During this “Graduation”, speeches were given with advice to the graduates and to everyone in this time period. You are not graduating high school or college, but you are moving onto middle school and that is a big step to be proud of. What advice would you have for the incoming 5th graders? What should they know about “surviving” 5th grade? What about those 2nd graders…coming to Acworth for the first time…what do they need to know as they leave McCall Primary and come to our Intermediate school? What do those 2nd graders need to know about their new teacher (me)? Write a little or write a lot; this is your “speech”. Thank you notes One of the things that students will often do in the last days of any grade, but especially when leaving one school for another, is to reach out to those teachers who made a difference in their lives. You did not have the chance to do that at Acworth, not even the time to wave good bye on your “5th grade walk”. Think about who you would want to thank and say good bye to. Write a message to at least one teacher who influenced you. If you write it, I’ll see that it is delivered. Be sure to include the teacher’s name and your name in the message, even if it is as simple as: To: Mrs. Teacher Message From: Your Name Schoolhouse Math This year you will leave elementary school and get ready for the 2nd half of your schooling years. Some of you went to preschool, but your first really formal education began in Kindergarten. For this problem, we are going to count this school year as a normal 180 day school year!

This is to determine if we will continue doing Zoom chats, if we'll continue doing Read Alouds, and if so what we will choose to read. This should take less than 5 minutes. All are multiple choice (and there are even pictures). Please have them complete it by tomorrow, Tuesday evening. THANKS!!! (link is above, and linked through the button below) |
