Good afternoon parents, If you are anything like me, you are ready for a break. I am definitely looking forward to Spring Break! We all kind of have “Spring Fever” here in the classroom. It might be a long week, but we’ll do our best to stay sane and productive 😉. This Friday we have a day of FUN! We will have having a school wide STEM challenge. Each class, and really groups of students in each class, will be in competition with one another to create a trellis to help grow pea plants in our garden. This ties in so nicely with our unit on life cycles in science. Today we planted lima bean seeds to learn about how plants grow and get us ready for this STEM challenge. While we will start the challenge on Friday, we will continue to monitor our class pea plants even after break. If there are any families that would like to “plant-sit” our plants over break, please contact me and I can arrange to send them home safely with your student(s) on Friday afternoon. I will be out of town (and have never been a successful gardener), so I will not be able to take care of them during break. Also on Friday, the Kona Ice truck will be returning. Students can bring in money to purchase Kona Ice and enjoy during an extra long recess that day. What a great way to kick off our Spring Break. And, not that you could have forgotten, but the dates of that break are 4/4-4/8. We return to school on Monday, April 11. We have reached the season of yellow pollen and fluctuating weather. I understand the seasonal allergies, and have been feeling the scratchy throat caused by yellow covered everything! Please remind your child to try to sneeze and/or cough into their elbows. Although what we have the most in our class is runny noses. We are going through tissues like water around here. If your child has been suffering from these allergies, and you know they are likely blowing their nose dozens of times a day, please considering donating a box or two of tissues to replenish our dwindling supply. We are nearly out…and I don’t think what we have will hold up to the length that the pollen will be here. With this season also comes the cooler mornings and warmer afternoons. Remind your students to bring their coats home in the afternoons. We keep having lost jackets…or rather found piles of jackets…from students who wore them to school but forgot them on the warmer afternoons. Labeling your child’s coats help, as I can identify the owners and match them up again. The building is still set to a moderate temperature, so many kids want to keep a jacket on all day. I prefer for kids to keep a sweatshirt in their bags for when they are cold in class. Sweatshirts are less bulky and have less of a tendency to make kids sleepy (as they get when wrapped up in cozy warm winter coats). Lastly, we are close to earning our most recent compliments jar party. We need just a handful more of compliments to earn our Popcorn and Movie party. The class will actually have a chance to earn a few more compliments when I am out this Thursday. My son’s 5th grade class is taking their last elementary school field trip and I will be joining them as a chaperone. Thus, I’ll be out and a substitute will be here. Our class always does so well for subs and I know she’ll leave lots of words of praise in her notes to me!
